We all go through it. Here's a field guide.
Stage One: Optimism
You pull out the suitcase five days early. You are a person who plans ahead now. You lay everything out on the bed in beautiful little stacks: the linen dress, the crochet cover-up, the one hat that looks good on you. You Pinterest-search "capsule wardrobe Mediterranean" and feel very in control of your life.
This is going to be easy. You might even pack light.
Stage Two: The Spiral
It's two days before the trip. What if there's a fancy dinner? What if there's a boat day? What if it's cold at night? What if it rains? What if there's a party you didn't know about and you need something with sequins?
You pull out three more dresses. Then four.
You have now packed for a completely different woman living a completely different life.
Stage Three: The Purge
The suitcase will not close. You sit on it. It still will not close.
You take everything out, look at it in a pile on your floor, and briefly consider cancelling the trip.
You put back only the essentials, which somehow still includes seven bathing suits.
Stage Four: The Mysterious Additions
At 11pm the night before, you add: a book you will not read, a candle in case the hotel smells weird, three extra pairs of underwear "just in case," a hair mask, a tiny bottle of olive oil (why?), your favorite mug (WHY?), and a swimsuit you haven't worn since 2019 but somehow feels important today.
Stage Five: Surrender
You zip the bag. You do not look inside it again. You will wear the same white linen dress every night of the trip anyway. You knew this. You have always known this. The ocean does not care what you wear.
What actually works, from someone who has done this too many times:
One great swimsuit beats five mediocre ones. Bring the one you feel best in and one backup.
A single "nice dinner" outfit does more than three. One slip dress, one sequin skirt, one silk top — pick one and commit.
Linen and cotton over everything. They wrinkle beautifully, dry fast, and forgive gelato.
Sandals you can walk 10,000 steps in. No exceptions. The cobblestones are not your friend.
Skip the "just in case" items. You will not need the candle, the mug, or the second hair mask. I promise.
Sunscreen, sunglasses, one great bag. Everything else is decoration.
Pack the sunscreen, and leave the rest to the sea.
